Merchant Princes #01: The Family Trade by Charles Stross
Merchant Princes #01: The Family Trade

Melvyn Laycock, January 2, 2010

This is an amazing story of a family who have the ability to walk between alternate worlds. They use a pattern which when focused on takes the person to an alternate world. The heroine of this tale is a journalist called Miriam Beckstein. She was adopted as a baby by the Becksteins. Her adoptive mother gives her a box with effects which were found with her as a baby, Inside is a locket which she takes home. Later she opens the locket while sitting in front of a computer and looking at the pattern inside finds herself in a forest still sitting in the chair. She manages to get home using the locket again.
