The South Country by Edward, Jr. Thomas
The South Country

Michael Fried, January 30, 2013

Thomas was a poet who might have been one of the great English poets of the 20th century had he not lost his life in World War I. He was also the very close friend of Robert Frost during Frost's years in England and, apparently, was the inspiration of Frost's famous poem, "The Road Not Taken." In this book first published in 1909, a few years before he met Frost, we accompany Thomas, as if walking alongside, reflecting on the sights and people of southern England. Not only are we delighted by the beautiful and sensitive descriptions of the natural landscape, but also by Thomas' thoughts on society, poetry, nature study, and history. It is a real joy to read.
