Sunshine on Scotland Street (44 Scotland Street) by Alexander Mccall Smith
Sunshine on Scotland Street (44 Scotland Street)

Michele D, October 31, 2014

I love the entire 44 Scotland Street series! This book is no exception. McCall Smith reintroduces old friends, like Bruce and Pat, as a teaser for the next novel. Then, of course, we hear from Angus and Domenica, Matthew and Elspeth, and of course, delightful Bertie. This series is a "quick read" series. The format provides fun and quick jaunts into each characters' lives. Pick up a copy and have some fun!

The Dry Grass of August by Anna Jean Mayhew
The Dry Grass of August

Michele D, August 9, 2013

I do agree with the comments that if you did enjoy reading The Secret Life of Bees and The Help, you will like this book. Although sad (yes, there was sadness in the other two books as well) at times, and maybe not quite the ending I thought it should have, this is a book in progress. America is still healing from its racist roots, even in the 21st century. This is a work of fiction based on a very dark and grim part of our country's history. The racism and bigotry of the 1950s is still present today, although hidden in plain daylight. Read this book - it will give yet another poignant message regarding our past and how we can heal.

Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch by Sally Bedell Smith
Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch

Michele D, January 1, 2013

I calculated that I read approximately 50 books this year. Many of them I will read again; this book is no exception! Ms Bedell-Smith writes an amazing account about a person I admire so much. No, Her Majesty has not made some popular decisions or seemed calculated in others, but I honestly believe she made those choices and decisions with her duty to continuity of her country and to her family. In some cases, I don't think any decision she made would have been right but she made the best choice. Her record on the throne is amazing and is well on her way to being the longest reigning monarch. God Save the Queen!

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Michele D, June 19, 2012

A delightfully written book. A sensitively written account of a very dark period of world history peppered with humourous anecdotes and fun stories of life on Guernsey during and after WWII. I laughed and cried from beginning to end. A must read work of fiction!

Elizabeth the Queen: Inside the Life of a Modern Monarch
Elizabeth the Queen: Inside the Life of a Modern Monarch

Michele D, March 4, 2012

What an enjoyable read from start to finish! My Mum remembers a national holiday where schools and business closed to watch Princess Elizabeth become Queen. Ms Bedell Smith writes well and tells a story of a woman and monarch worth reading about. Her reign has not been without raised eyebrows from time to time but it is nothing compared to some of our public figures' lives! A refreshing story of integrity, love of her husband, family, her subjects, a deep faith in God, and study of grace.
