Not a fan of science fiction, I fell in love with this book. I think it is appropriate for a 5th grade class. It can be understood on a simple level where robots speak about their lack of freedom, or it has a deeper message about life.

Mysteries worth reading are hard to find. This one mixes math (pentaminoes-figures made of 5 touching squares), art, and mystery. My students love it. It leaves you with the sense that art is valuable and important in people's lives. True to the mystery genre, there are red herrings, 2 sleuths, and deductions to be made. Appropriate for 5th graders for sure.

As a 5th grade teacher, I am always looking for a good book. This one kept my attention all the way through. When I went online for support materials, I found reviews from many adults who still call it their favorite book after having read it in grade school. The message reveals itself slowly and is a positive one in the face of much negative history. The book also leaves you thinking with many unanswered questions.
