I am the type of person who tends to linger on the "what if's" in my life and the world in general. This novel completely satisfied many of my personal fantasies.
This laugh-out-loud funny book is about an overweight, middle-aged man who decides to run in the New York City Marathon. Anyone who has ever attempted to get in shape for any reason can relate to this book's story.

Seriously, this highly enjoyable read is doubly satisfying knowing that it won the 2008 PEN/Faulkner Award. Another woman author breaks through the literary glass ceiling. Hurray!

I never expect to run in the New York City Marathon. But after reading this funny, poignant, and thoughtful book, I have gained an appreciation for what it takes to compete in such a race. The 26.2 chapters (one for each mile of the marathon) describe the challenges and frustrations of the physical and emotional commitment necessary not only for running marathons but also living life.
