The Colony of Unrequited Dreams by Wayne Johnston
The Colony of Unrequited Dreams

mona, April 1, 2014

The history of Newfoundland may not be at the top of everyone's must-learn list, but this novel goes beyond that. Johnston's writing is so beautiful that even politics are made enthralling. I'm sorry I didn't discover him sooner.

A beautiful voice recounting one of the most horrific stories I've read in a long time. I respect her writing of this book as an immense feat of courage and determination. Many of us would have crumbled.

Tomorrow to Be Brave: A Memoir of the Only Woman Ever to Serve in the French Foreign Legion by Susan Travers
Tomorrow to Be Brave: A Memoir of the Only Woman Ever to Serve in the French Foreign Legion

Mona, December 28, 2012

It's hard to put into words what a powerful book this is. While it is a well written autobiography and history, it is so much more than that. Susan Travers was an amazing woman and her experiences both before and during WWII were more interesting than any fiction. She is an inspiration. This book should be required reading for school children and adults alike.

Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power by Rachel Maddow
Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power

Mona, March 21, 2012

this book has everything we would expect from rachel: intelligence, humor, honesty, and depth. it also leaves you troubled and thinking about not how we got here, but how we fix our comfort level with perpetual war.

Harpo Speaks! by Harpo Marx
Harpo Speaks!

Mona, February 23, 2012

after a lifetime of enjoying the films of the marx brothers, it was such a joy to dive into the life of harpo, my favorite. his writing style was perfectly conversational and makes you feel like you are following him through his life. fascinating characters and events kept me awake night after night.
