Who'd have thought that some of the best works of art along Oregon's highways are the work of an engineer? Oregon was incredibly lucky to have Conde McCullough design bridges that were beautiful, functional, and state-of-the-art--and most of them are still with us. This book will enhance your appreciation of the man and his bridges.

Don't let the subtitle put you off--this conversational, enthusiastic book is a great one-volume introduction for anyone who wants to get their ideas out there in words. It covers the whole process: choosing a subject; writing so people will want to read; finding and dealing with editors and publishers (whether newsletter, magazine, book, or the web); and marketing.
When my daughters were teenagers, I read some chapters once a week to keep some kind of perspective through all the rebellion and disdain. I recommend it to all my friends with daughters.
This book is terrific for writers, readers, and all others who love words. However, unless you use it frequently, you'll forget how much information it has and won't use it when it could help you; and something else on the page you're consulting is bound to catch your eye and lead you astray. Other reference books should have those problems.

The title promises so much, the book delivers so little. Bloom is apparently beyond editing; many of his comments get repeated about five times. While there were a couple of nuggets, this Christian wished he'd give more background on why he pictures Yahweh as he does, and that he'd learned a basic fact about about Christianity: there are millions of us who are not Mariolotrists.
