This was a fun book. The characters were a little heavy with the sarcasm for me. But it didn't detract from a creative story. The idea of a teenage grim reaper made me laugh. The book is a page turner. I really had a hard time putting it down.
I won this book from the Goodreads FirstReads giveaway. I really enjoyed it. I love to read about a profession that is new to me. I like to see how things look from the inside. This was a fascinating fly on the wall look at zookeeping. What a story! It doesn't run completely chronologically and so this caused me some confusion at first, but it didn't diminish my pleasure in reading. I work at a library and this book will be high on my list of books to recommend and I will probably buy a couple of copies for Christmas gifts. I was also given a DVD of the movie and I look forward to viewing it. I'm glad that I had the book to read first.
I'm a librarian and received a copy of this book from NetGalleys. There are quite a lot of wild antics in this book. I was taken aback at first for the lack of consequences for some of the more irresponsible actions of the characters. I was glad (as were the characters) when an caring adult finally took charge to help these kids toward their dreams. It is certainly a page turner. As a librarian I know that there are some kids that would really appreciate what this book has to say. I'm glad to have it to share with them.
Indian Captive is a story that will make a great gift and open doors to terrific conversations. I appreciated it as much now as an adult as I did when I was a child. I loved the gentle introduction to Native American philosophy and Molly's sensitivity to the natural beauty around her even in some of the toughest times. I really felt for poor Molly as she was tugged at by two cultures. Each was described well and without prejudice. I was glad that it showed love wins over all. Lois Lenski did the classic illustrations that I remember so fondly from my childhood. A really wonderful package.
Working at the Children's desk at the library, I'm trying to read the Newbery award winners. Julie of the Wolves won in 1973 for good reason. I really enjoyed it. It is a wonderful tale of a girl on her own in the wilderness. Her struggles for food and companionship lead her to relationship with wolves. The story feels very real. I am eager to put this book into the hands of children here at the library. Especially good for anyone who loved My Side of the Mountain.
