Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner

NW girl in Charlotte, September 2, 2009

Written like memoir, this book takes your through the lives of two couples, each with foibles, humanity, and a strong love for one another. What a delight to read. Thoughtful, surprising, and unassuming. Stegner took no easy, predictable dramatic turns. The literary allusions tucked in throughout the book were subtle and sophisticated. I learned a lot as I read.

Downey brings Frances Perkins to life. Perkins is often overlooked in history books, and yet she changed the lives of every American. Great read, phenomenal subject. Truly one of the best biographies I've read.
