A wonderful fable that stirs the reader to re-examine the journey of life and whether they have listened to their heart or neglected their destiny. While it appears simple in nature, Coehlho succeeds in crafting a tale that includes insight and spirituality on many levels - so the reader's current state of mind dictates how deeply they are affected. This is a book for dreamers - and I am a dreamer.
This Penguin-Classics edition of the 100-story classic The Decameron is extremely well translated and thought out. For reading, the font is a good size and there is ample space in the margins for notes. The Translator's Intro is long but contains valuable background on Bocaccio's writing and influences (Dante, Petrarch, etc.). The Notes section is also wonderful and gives quick insight into passages or phrases/people that add depth to the reading. As for the book itself this is a relatively quick read (800+ pages but easy reading) and is filled with the 100 stories that if read with the understanding of the period (both of the post-plague history and that of literature of the 14th Century) is an essential read with great humor. It is also the perfect middle ground between Dante and Chaucer - not worth skipping if you plan to read a sincere collection of the Canon.
