Redshirts by John Scalzi

Fun, hilarious sci-fi novel. Reminds me of Douglas Adams wit. Great characters, twisting plot, and delightful dialogue. Second book I've read by John Scalzi and I am not disappointed.

Backfire (FBI Thriller) by Catherine Coulter
Backfire (FBI Thriller)

PM, December 27, 2013

The first in the FBI series I read, but it will definitely not be my last. I love the Savich, Sherlock husband and wife team who solve cases. The characters are well written. This case involves an old friend, Judge Ramsey, a mysterious note, attempted murder. The FBI series is a good read, don't miss this installment. Coulter's locale of San Francisco takes the reader all over the Bay area so folks familiar with the region will feel right at home.

Dead by Nightfall by Beverly Barton
Dead by Nightfall

PM, December 26, 2013

A wild ride of being outwitted by a dangerous protagonist who appears to come back from the dead to terrorize Griff, Yevette, and Sanders by kidnapping Nicole. If you like the Powell Agency saga of danger, intrigue, and travel to exotic places, this novel will not disappoint you. Beverly Barton gives romance, revenge, and dark violence in equal amounts that had me rooting for the good guys and questioning the make up and psyche of the bad guys. A good read and a page turner for sure.

Rowing to Latitude: Journeys Along the Arctic's Edge by Jill Fredston
Rowing to Latitude: Journeys Along the Arctic's Edge

PM, November 30, 2013

If you like extreme adventure and survival stories on the ocean, read about Jill and her husband as they explore the coasts of Canada, Alaska, Greenland, and beyond during late eighties and nineties. The couple designed specific rowing boats to handle heavy cargo and be sea worthy in ocean waves. You will delight in the tenacity and luck with their covering thousands of miles by human power and without satellite phones or rescue availability. They experienced wildlife camping on the beaches, storms at sea, glaciers calving, whales in ice (unforgettable description and discovery), native people, and Northern snow covered lands.
Jill views life realistically in her diary entries; she is also deeply moved by life. She gives us glimpses into how her adventures allow her to deal with grief, death, and hardship once she returns from this ocean excursions.
