Tin Lily by Joann Swanson

Pam Twilegar, October 5, 2014

Wow! This book kept me edgy and anxious start to finish! Tin Lily follows the healing process for Lily as she recovers from her mother's violent death in the first chapter. It's absolutely not a children's book; it's young adult, and engaging enough for adults as well. Written in first person present tense, the reader is tied to Lily as she battles inner and outer demons and begins to find her way. It's engaging and insightful.

Flight Behavior CD: Flight Behavior CD
Flight Behavior CD: Flight Behavior CD

I'm listening to this story for the second time straight through. At first, Kingslover's cadence as the narrator wasn't in tune to my ear, but as the story progressed, I came to love the soft southern lilt.

The language is truly beautiful. I've had to rewind to re-hear several of the phrases and as I said, am listening again to the whole book because the language is so beautiful.

I've listed Kingslover has my favorite author since I read The Bean Trees in college and now I remember exactly why. She combines a deep message with a great story line and wraps it in lyrical prose. Love it!

The Whistling Season by Ivan Doig
The Whistling Season

Pam Twilegar, January 1, 2010

I've long been an Ivan Doig fan, and would place a few of his novels in my all time top ten, but the shear accessibility of The Whistling Season placed it at the top of my pile. I loved the way I was drawn into the lives of the characters. Maybe it's the school teacher in me, or the life long student, likely both, as Doig created a one room school house where both the teacher and his star student were very tangible and real.
