Wildfire by Mary Pauline Lowry

Edge of your seat story by one who has been there. Great novel with depth and development of the characters. The story is about a woman rookie's learning to fight wildfire and be accepted by the all male hot shot team. That's not easy when there's so much to learn, and you have to get it right or people may be injured or die. All rookies have practical jokes played on them and have to prove themselves, but you will be judged more harshly as a woman because the team suspects a woman won't be good enough. In the end the rookie learns and is accepted, but there are a lot of harsh realities learned and her own personal demons to overcome. This reader with a pair of fire line boots found it a well told tale.

Among Others by Jo Walton
Among Others

Full of wonder, delight and erie danger. A coming of age for a girl who loves books and is coping with the death of her twin, the madness of her mother, coming to know her father and his family, and having an injured leg. She learns to deal with a new school, a new boyfriend, and most of all - the proper use of magic and becoming her own self. It is a story about coping with the world we live in, learning who we are and how we want to to live our lives. All of this is not just thought and feeling, but has action and danger too. This book is written with a delightful love of books which brings back memories of how we first discovered our favorite authors - the mystery writers, science fiction and non fiction writers. This book is not just another teen fantasy book, but is a thoughtful book for adults too.

Fantastic- can't wait for the next one in the series. This starts in Vienna and morphs to another reallity. Romance, character development, swordplay - all by a great story teller - much better than the usual. Have started to read her Inda series while wating for the next book. That series is also very well told.
