Parasol Protectorate #4: Heartless by Gail Carriger
Parasol Protectorate #4: Heartless

Parnassus on Wheels, February 3, 2012

A tongue in cheek, bodice ripping romp through a Victorian England of airships, vampires and werewolves. The supernatural coexist in this society out in the open and with full acceptance. Queen Victoria has a department of like beings to keep an eye on the shenanigans, of which our heroine, a "souless" woman married to an alpha werewolf is one. With one touch she can neutralize a supernatural, disabling its powers for the duration of the touch. She has a stubborn, independent streak which leads to many perilous adventures. Her best friends include a foppish dandy of a "rogue" vampire, a milliner who also invents absurd weaponry, and a silly bit of fluff who prefers her hats to be bigger, brighter and sillier than fashion dictates. The depiction of class structures within a werewolf pack or a vampire hive are interesting and her marriage to the powerful wolf never dull! Fans of Steampunk, vampires, werewolves will enjoy this.

Killer Stuff and Tons of Money: Seeking History and Hidden Gems in Flea-Market America by Maureen Stanton
Killer Stuff and Tons of Money: Seeking History and Hidden Gems in Flea-Market America

Parnassus on Wheels, January 23, 2012

My first foray into the second hand world was in fourth grade, buying a pink and red prom dress to wear in a school play.I've been hooked ever since. This book follows an itinerant antique dealer for a number of years as he buys, sells and trades his way, mostly at the holy grail of thrifters/ antiquers: Brimfield Market in Massachusetts. It's not an easy way to make money, but the addictive nature of the business keeps one going. Also included is a chapter on Antiques Roadshow (the appraisers make no money and pay their own expenses!), comic book collecting, and creating fake antiques. If you're a collector you'll want to add this to your shelf!

Lucifer's Tears (Inspector Vaara Novel) by James Thompson
Lucifer's Tears (Inspector Vaara Novel)

Parnassus on Wheels, January 19, 2012

A Scandinavian thriller written by an American living in Finland with the a main character who is a Finnish police detective married to an American living in Sweden. The inspector has a deep sadness in his past and is a good man trying to balance his work with his family life and find joy past his melancholy. The mystery was riveting - it kept me up ALL night reading! A follow up to "Snow Angels", also an excellent read.

The Ice Princess by Camilla Lackberg
The Ice Princess

Parnassus on Wheels, January 19, 2012

This book begins with a haunting description of a beautiful woman's dead body in a bathtub of frozen water. Mesmerizing. If you like Scandinavian thrillers this is a great choice. It has the mystery of a Stieg Larson, but is less violent and without the twisted sex. The mystery carried to the end, with lots of character development and depiction of Swedish life in a fishing village cum tourist town.
