Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow
Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens

Patricia Banka, January 1, 2013

I have several books on chicken care, but if I had to choose the one that has been the most helpful overall, this would be it. As an owner of a small flock kept primarily for providing eggs for my own family plus a few others, the sections I most appreciated dealt with coop setup, feeding routines and flock management. If you want to raise a flock that is healthy, this book will tell you how. You will learn about maximizing egg production and about chicken health and first aid. Beyond that, there is a wealth of information for those who are more serious about their fowl and raising them for profit, including the basics of breeding, exhibiting and raising birds for meat. While those sections don't necessarily apply to what I'm doing with my flock, I found them interesting enough to read for the sheer enjoyment of learning as well as gleaning more tidbits of information that can be applied while raising my basic backyard flock. While there are other books out there I would recommend also, Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow contains everything you need.
