Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan by Greg Mortenson and Mike Bryan
Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan

Peacemaker, January 30, 2010

Is there anyone who hasn't read, or at least heard of, “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson and David Relin, which is subtitled “One Man's Mission To Promote Peace ...One School At A Time?” It's required reading for many of the military going to Afghanistan. But Wait!...the sequel “Stones into Schools-Promoting Peace with Books Not Bombs in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” is even more riveting, beautiful, and inspiring than “Three Cups of Tea.” This former mountain climber, building schools and educating girls in remote mountainous areas does more for peace and security than all the bombs (let's not go there.) Read it and think about what the world could be.

Palestinian Walks: Forays Into a Vanishing Landscape by Raja Shehadeh
Palestinian Walks: Forays Into a Vanishing Landscape

Peacemaker, July 19, 2009

Palestinian Walks held my attention because it reminded me of my walks in the eastern Oregon desert, clambering over rocks, enjoying wildflowers and birds, and discovering traces of earlier inhabitants. The author of Palestinian Walks follows ancient paths in Palestine, gives vivid descriptions of the plants and terrain, and connects it to his family history, living with the changing seasons and political climate of their homeland. I recommend this book to anyone who loves nature, wants to experience a country in a new way, and is willing to explore the irreversible changes that can be imposed on a land and its people by development and political decisions.

Crying Tree Uk by Naseem Rakha
Crying Tree Uk

Peacemaker, June 23, 2009

Since this book is not available in stores until July 7, 2009, I am reporting what those who have read it say: This book by an Oregon author and OBP journalist shows that forgiveness is possible and is a better for healing victim's families than seeking retribution and punishment through the death penalty.
