Natasha's Dance: A Cultural History of Russia by Orlando Figes
Natasha's Dance: A Cultural History of Russia

Peggy Sterling, August 4, 2012

How does a Westerner get inside the mind of a Russian? Taken along on a trip to St. Petersburg, this cultural history dives right in with a quote from Tolstoy in the first chapter. Gradually building one's knowledge of the periods and influences of Russia, this book provides a great overview and understanding of a foreign way of life and thinking. Made many of the sights and behaviors of Russians much more understandable.

The Power of Kindness: The Unexpected Benefits of Leading a Compassionate Life by Piero Ferrucci
The Power of Kindness: The Unexpected Benefits of Leading a Compassionate Life

Peggy Sterling, August 4, 2012

A book for our times.
Providing personal examples of all the character attributes that contribute to living kindly, Ferrucci provides a moral compass for our increasingly cold and distant world. While kindness makes the world a better place for others by shifting the focus from our oft self-centered ways, Ferrucci shows also how it enriches and expands the kind person's life too. He does this in just 18 short, interwoven chapters.
Great gift for graduates, newly marrieds or anyone in transition...

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson
In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin

Peggy Sterling, August 4, 2012

From the first chapter, Larson's intimate, lively history grips the reader and carries one along; it's an intriguing account of the life of Roosevelt's last choice of Germany's ambassador, brought naively into the disintegrating society. Rather than change Germany by polite historical reviews, the story shows the impact the unbelievable events have on the ambassador and his family. A MUST READ, even by readers who normally avoid history.

The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child by Donalyn Miller
The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child

Peggy Sterling, January 19, 2012

Parents & grandparents-this book is IT! If you have a reluctant reader, the tips and techniques used by this teacher are critical, both to spark an interest and then serve as a catalyst for the love of READING in children. If one can read, the world is theirs. It is the most important skill and interest a child can be given. The love of reading is a distinguishing factor for later success and happiness in life.
Read this, you'll love it!
