A Chicken in Every Yard: The Urban Farm Store's Guide to Chicken Keeping by Robert Litt and Hannah Litt
A Chicken in Every Yard: The Urban Farm Store's Guide to Chicken Keeping

Penni4, March 16, 2015

Though you can find a lot of really useful information online about raising chickens; I found this book very helpful. I recommend it to anyone thinking about getting chickens to read in advance and make sure you know what you are in for.
It's written with a good sense of humor making it not only informative, but also enjoyable.

The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker
The Age of Miracles

Penni4, January 6, 2015

I picked up this book because a friend happens to know the author and this same friend knows I enjoy dystopian books so they thought I would enjoy reading this one.
I'm not sure I'd call it dystopian but it had a flare of dystopian to it or at least the sequel would. (I don't think that would be considered a spoiler)
It doesn't really matter if it's dystopian or not though, because I am glad it was recommended. Age of Miracles is a well written book. The type of book that makes you want to continue to read even though you know you should be sleeping, or doing the laundry, or bathing the dog...you get my point.
Powell's Staff, you picked a good one.

The Silver Star by Jeannette Walls
The Silver Star

Penni4, January 6, 2015

It usually takes me a month to read a book. I read this book in 1 week. It's not that it's a particularly short book; it's just a well written book.
I really enjoyed the Glass Castle so I thought, why not try another book by Ms. Walls. I was not let down.
This may be a good book for you if you enjoy the beauty of adolescence, and really likable characters. The Silver Star will take you back to a time when life appeared more simple but really had more unspoken rules. A time when people truly cared and looked out for each other without being too quick to judge. It's a delightful reminder that family should always come first and be there for each other no matter what happened in the past.

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail (Vintage) by Cheryl Strayed
Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail (Vintage)

Penni4, December 28, 2014

Read it before you watch the movie? Does it really matter? This book wasn't really good, this book wasn't really bad. This book was okay. As I said in a previous review; this is the book that made me realize I have to like a character in order to like a book. No offense Cheryl, but I don't think I would want to hang out and have a beer with your 20+ year old self anytime soon.
I agree 100% with another reviewer below. I wanted to read more about this awesome life changing hiking experience and less about sex, drugs, and (well there really wasn't any rock n roll). I admire Cheryl for continuing on this amazing journey. I would have given up for sure.

To sum it up the writing style is enjoyable and easy to read, the content, not so much. If you have a friend who says "hey you want to borrow this book?" borrow it. If you are browsing through Powell's for your next great read; check out the Staff Picks and move on.
