Yasunari Kawabata's writing is lyrical and flows so smoothly that the words never seem to interfere with the narrative. In his short stories, he creates beautiful, verbal dioramas. I felt that I was reading something wholly new: a unique form somewhere between a short story and a haiku. This is a collection that I go back to re-read often.
