Stegner brings 2 stories to life, past and present, in the search launched by an old man crippled in body and mind to find his history in his grandmother's story. The West comes alive in the telling of his grandmother's life, and Lyman Ward the grandson lives on in his story of his quest. Soul-stirring writing - suitably rewarded with the Pulitzer Prize in 1971.

Isabel Dalhousie captures my interest and deep affection for her elegant, graceful understanding of herself and those around her. She thinks, and examines her thoughts, in a serious yet refreshing manner, making her humor a delightful surprise when it pops out.
I was delighted to meet Jamie (this is my first Dalhousie novel) and loved the resolution. Beautiful book, which leads me to the complete series for the complete story...McCall Smith writes another winner!
