Epic. A classic on a par with War and Peace (yes, really), which was what the Author read three times during his over 1,000 days at the front during WWII!
To get a taste of this, there are a series of dramatizations of small parts on the BBC website, with Brannagh etc starring which are excellent in and of themselves. Back-story of Grossman and this book are fascinating too.
I began thinking I'd NEVER finish it, and was devastated when it ended!
