The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly by Sun-mi Hwang
The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly

Reading teacher, January 1, 2014

It is hard to believe how many complex themes this slim volume is capable of exploring in a simply told fable starring a hen named Sprout. The English version of this Korean tale includes ink illustrations that add even more charm to the story. This is the perfect book club choice for those that complain they don't have time to read a long book. Although the read is quick, the story, the characters, and the conflicts explored provide much material for great discussions. You will find yourself thinking about Sprout, Straggler, and Greentop long after you finish the story!

Fire Season: Field Notes from a Wilderness Lookout by Philip Connors
Fire Season: Field Notes from a Wilderness Lookout

Reading teacher, January 12, 2013

Loved this book. Talks of nature, literature, the history of forest service, all topics that I am interested in. In fact, I found the history of fire fighting and how we manage our forest land so interesting that it led me to read "The Big Burn" which was another great read. I enjoy books that lead me to other books!

Junkyard Dogs (Walt Longmire Mysteries) by Craig Johnson
Junkyard Dogs (Walt Longmire Mysteries)

Reading teacher, August 21, 2012

My favorite in the Walt Longmire series so far - it has many laugh out loud scenes in it! Johnson's depiction of the winter setting in Wyoming throughout February is so vivid that the weather practically becomes a character in the book. Ready to move on to the next book - hope that it is as good as this one.

Seaglass Summer by Anjali Banerjee

This is a great book for kids who love animals, however the stories that are told are not just the "warm fuzzies", animals also get hurt and die. This is an eye-opener for the main character, Poppy Ray, and may also be for some readers. Other serious subjects are also introduced such as being away from your family, racial discrimination, and forming mature friendships with members of the opposite sex. Many of these subjects are dealt with in humorous ways which makes them more accessible to younger readers.

I love all the Mr. Putter and Tabby books, but this is my absolute favorite! Kids love them too. The series is perfect for developing readers, very readable yet have great story lines. Can't go wrong with Cynthia Rylant.
