Strong Poison introduces the character of Harriet Vane in Dorothy Sayers' mystery novels. Ms. Vane, a mystery novelist herself, is accused of poisoning her lover. Lord Peter Wimsey steps in to help exonerate her and find the true murderer, motivated not so much for his usual love of sleuthing but more that he has fallen in love with Ms. Vane.
Two succeeding novels, Have His Carcase and Gaudy Night follow the relationship between Ms. Vane and Lord Peter. I feel Strong Poison is the weakest of the three; it's a fairly solid mystery novel, but as a relationship novel, it's a bit lacking. But read it anyway so you know where these two characters start.
