420 Characters by Lou Beach
420 Characters

Richard Katz, January 18, 2012

Very strange, but compellingly readable. The author, Lou Beach is best known for his illustrations and record cover art, and indeed the illustrations herein are fun. The stories are 420 characters each(-they began as Facebook posts). What haiku is to epic poetry these are to novels or short stories. Thus the book may be read in an hour,or over months. I strongly urge the latter.

The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr
The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains

Richard Katz, January 1, 2011

Carr persuasively argues that internet use affects our ability to engage deeply with text. This book builds upon his Atlantic essay "Google is Making us Stupid" demonstrating in a variety of paradigms that internet searching is producing a habit of fragmented attention.
