Japanese Reader: Graded Lessons in the Modern Language (Tuttle Language Library)

Richard Vincent, October 30, 2010

Wow! Blast from the past. I was working on an MA in Japanese Lit. 1972-1975, unfinished, at the University of Washington and Roy Miller was using this book in the 4th year class. It is pretty thorough, but quite dry and geared for scholars. The publishing of readers has really improved in the years since. However Japanese is far behind Russian, Italian, German and French in relation to interesting material. I read a lot of Russian mystery material and there is a lot in German and Italian, including redacted versions of famous mystery writers. Japanese publishing needs to do this. I am always looking for readers that are crime or mystery oriented. The excitement of the chase will keep one enthused about plowing through the Kanji.
