Fred Gaisberg was probably the single most important pioneer in the world of record producers. He traveled all over the world, recording not only classical music, but the music of many different cultures. Even thogh he worked in the world of commercial music, his contributions were as significant as those of Alan Lomax, and his recordings preceded Alan's work.
For anyone interested in the history of recording and the evolution of recorded sound, this book is a must.
Most of the books about blues are either so general as to be impersonal, or they are written by fans who exaggerate the achievements of a particular artist. William Ferris is a folklorist who has spent his life collecting music in Mississippi, outside of a brief period where he headed the National Endowment for the Humanities. He got to know the musicians profiled in the book over a long period of time, rather than during a brief grant-funded music collection journey. The people that Ferris profiles aren't famous or vastly popular artists, but they represent the heart and soul behind of a regional music that has attracted universal interest, enjoyment, and study. Because most of us will never be able to duplicate Ferris' travels, the CD is a great way for us to understand and apprceiate the culture that he loves and writes about.
The kora is a very unusual and magical instrument. This is a book and record set that includes the playing of various kora artists, and a beautifully designed and informative large booklet that provides details about the history of the instrument, its geographic distribution, and various players. It includes some beautiful color pictures of the instrument and its players.
The book provides many interesting details about the intersections of the careers of these three singer-songwriters. It fails to deal with some of the contradictions of their lives with the feminist movement. For example, why do virtually all of Carole King's songs include a male protagonist? James Taylor, Bob Dylan and others write about women, but it isn't their exclusive concern.
