Most books on the difficult 24/7 job of parenting read like cookbooks! Real parents know that we are not "baking" a kid; there are just too many ingredients to control. Instead, Ms. Clarke encourages and supports parents while teaching about developmental stages and discipline at each stage that will help foster healthy self-esteem for your child. This book is real - it considers families of all types and all socioeconomic stiuations. Each stage of childhood development is presented in chapter form, and each chapter examines a fictional family facing problems that include adjusting to childhood behaviors. It is important to me that while the focus is on understanding and responsing to the child's behaviors, other problems that the family may be experiencing concurrently are included. Gee, just like the real world, which doesn't stop so that you can deal exclusively with your kids issues. Each chapter ends with encouragement for the parents to get the support they need and recognition that the job of parenting is difficult. This book helped me to have confidence in parenting and affirm that I was doing the best that I could at the time. I revisit this book several times a year: it always helps me see a situation clearly and tackle my parenting job with compassion for myself and my children.
