American Pastoral by Philip Roth
American Pastoral

Roslyn, January 1, 2010

Anything by Philip Roth will do. He is far and away the best we have produced in a long time; the Shakespeare of our time. In American Pastoral, the tiny details and the big themes are moving, interesting, illuminating and, sometimes, life changing.

We need more than galoshes in New England at this time as the snow falls by the foot.

Young Man and the Sea: Recipes and Crispy Fish Tales from Esca by David Pasternack
Young Man and the Sea: Recipes and Crispy Fish Tales from Esca

Roslyn, April 25, 2007

I am lucky enough to have eaten at ESCA in New York City and have read glowing reviews of David Pasternack's cooking in newspapers and magazines. The book's recipes are interspersed with tales of fishing beginning when David was a boy growing up on Long Island. David continues to fish and supplies a lot of the needs of the restaurant.

Where the Wild Things Are (Caldecott Collection) by Maurice Sendak
Where the Wild Things Are (Caldecott Collection)

Roslyn, December 12, 2006

I have given this book to more children than I can count. It has never been out of print since it was published in the 60's. It is the masterwork of Maurice Sendak, the best children's book illustrator of all time.

Mommy? by Maurice Sendak and Arthur Yorinks and Matthew Reinhart
Mommy?

Roslyn, November 13, 2006

When you combine the talents of the best children's book illustrator and one of the pre-eminent paper engineers, the results of the Sendak-Reinhart "Mommy?" are an amazing delight for kids of all ages. Pop-up fans will appreciate Sendak's first effort in this genre and all other afficianados are familiar with Reinhart's extraordinary work.
