This is not a "weekend read." It took me over a year (off and on) to finish it, but it is well worth it. Do you want to know why the Near East is such a mess, then read this book. It covers Afghanistan's history from the Soviet invasion up until 9/11. You'll read about the Taliban, Mohammed Omar, Hamid Karzai, the ISI, Ahmad Massoud, Al Qaeda, the CIA, George Tenet, President Clinton, and more as they work to achieve their goals. I found myself hoping that the next plan or idea would finally work while all along knowing how it was all going to end. Along with Rory Steward's "The Places in between" this book gives the reader an in depth view of the people, history, and power players of modern day Afghanistan.
Powell's City of Books is an independent bookstore in Portland, Oregon, that fills a whole city block with more than a million new, used, and out of print books. Shop those shelves — plus literally millions more books, DVDs, and eBooks — here at Powells.com.
