The Scent Trail: How One Woman's Quest for the Perfect Perfume Took Her Around the World by Celia Lyttelton
The Scent Trail: How One Woman's Quest for the Perfect Perfume Took Her Around the World

Sara Gann, August 27, 2009

I am a perfume junky, and love reading about the raw materials used in perfumes, as well as the exotic and sometimes wierd world of scent manufacturing. However this book was a big disappointment, mainly due to the jerky writing style and inclusion of way too many uninteresting and unimportant details about what perfumers were wearing, how the author was feeling, her opinions of particular perfumes, and the constant reveries she falls into. Some of the language, too, was very antiquated British English that most Brits no longer use. I kept thinking that maybe this book was written by some old Colonial, but as Ms. Lyttleton referred often to her young son, she can't have been over 80, although she wrote like she was!

With a good editor, this could have been whittled down (and focused) into a nice, entertaining travelogue, as the premise is quite interesting, as are the exotic locales the author visited. Ms. Lyttelton badly needed a good editor--this travelogue was full of typos and strange punctuation, and she could have used a fact-checker, as well.

Chandler Burr's book on his year inside the perfume industry that came out last year is far superior if one is interested in perfumery.
