The Candy Bombers: The Untold Story of the Berlin Airlift and America's Finest Hour by Andrei Cherny
The Candy Bombers: The Untold Story of the Berlin Airlift and America's Finest Hour

Skyhawk maintainer, January 2, 2013

This is the amazing story of how a random act of kindness changed the outlook of the German people towards Americans after the war. Once the war was over, the Soviets began taking over bordering countries and once they started on Germany and in particular Berlin, the origin of what came to known as the Col;d War started in earnest. The Author compares the workups to the 1948 election to the evolution of the Berlin Airlift to show how without one, the other couldn't have happened and how they influenced the other. After the failures of the British to supply their Army in Kut, Iraq in WW1 and the Germans to supply their Army in Stalingrad during WW2, nobody believed it was possible to supply a city by air. When the airlift was all but over and the troops were rotating back home, on the train they were riding, someone chalked "It did happen!" That in itself pretty much sums up the unbelievable events that led up to the election of Harry Truman and the success of the Airlift. This phenomenal historical (as opposed to hysterical) event is one all Americans should be made aware.
