The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson
The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America

Sofi, August 31, 2012

I first heard about this on the "Stuff You Missed in History Class" podcast - and the book did not disappoint! The story of the World's Fair would have been compelling on its own - combined with the bizarre life of H.H. Holmes, it was hard to put down. A fascinating episode in America's history!!

Drawing Lab for Mixed-Media Artists: 52 Creative Exercises to Make Drawing Fun (Lab) by Carla Sonheim
Drawing Lab for Mixed-Media Artists: 52 Creative Exercises to Make Drawing Fun (Lab)

Sofi, August 1, 2012

This is a fantastic book of drawing exercises that are a lot of fun and really work for jump-starting your creativity. I recently starting drawing again after a 15-year hiatus from art, and the most difficult thing was figuring out what to draw. This book gave me the push I needed to get going again, and I still pull it out when I'm having a bout of "artist's block". This is also NOT one of those art books that require you to go out and spend gobs of money on obscure art supplies before you can get started.

Moby-Dick in Pictures: One Drawing for Every Page by Matt Kish
Moby-Dick in Pictures: One Drawing for Every Page

Sofi, January 1, 2012

One of the most amazing art books I have ever seen. Kish's style is unpretentious and striking. Has inspired me to get creative again - here is proof that you don't need expensive art supplies, spacious studio space or an art education to produce something spectacular.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy
The Road

Sofi, November 16, 2007

A beautifully written and disturbing book. The post-apocalyptic tale, in truth, is a distillation of the secret fear all parents harbor in their hearts: Does the overwhelming love I have for my children blind me to what is best for them? And what choices would I make for them if all options seemed equally terrifying and wrong?
