Things the Grandchildren Should Know, the title mislead me, and I am a memoir addict, can sniff em out anywhere, stuck upside down in library shelves, lying out on a park bench.
This cruise through books led me to Powell's site, and I thought, Oh good, something I can leave with my granddaughter." Not exactly like controlling beyond the grave, but just making sure wise things would be said, and she could read them through her evolving years.
Not so, but nevertheless he had me, the author had me. First few sentences, honest, clearly written, and I'm off to find the book.
thanks

Bacevich was on Bill Moyers last night. He was brilliant, perceptive and cast a wide net of facts and insights into the deep structure of Presidential Power, our now being an Imperialist nation (my words); and incredible perceptions as if one from the future looking back, like a brain surgeon, noting what shard in the brain, or heart for that matter, crippled our nation. His book is a must read.

I was quite interested in reading this excerpt, hoping I would like it. I did like his previous book but was disappointed because of the author's misrepresentation of same as memoir.
If this is fiction, and continues on in the same way, dialogue, not showing, telling, reporting, it won't work. Frey has a unique style, and he could just about pull it off, but I am not sure. Just continued reporting doesn't work in fiction, it makes it flat, one dimensional.
He is intriguing tho.

A true storyregarding hurricane Katrina. The artworks hits you on a soul level, and then it's all over after the first sentence, "In the jazzy spicy city of New Orleans/In a building colored mango tangerine." This book on a young hero is gently written and beautifully illustrated, utilizing the poetry of jazz and the art of the Caribbean, and tells of 6 year old De Monte Love separated from his parents by Hurricane Katrina. De Monte Love takes care of six younger children - his brother, two cousins and several friends in the streets of downtown New Orleans. A must children's book!

Where is Jo Ann Beard? I fell into verbal enchantment upon reading the preface to The Boys of My Youth, her pre-verbal memories, little, a boy doll named Hal with blue eyes and lickable hands and feet made of vinyl," lovable to her more than humans and the adventures that followed; a must and whimsied read causing a lot of chortles; great writing! I have been waiting for her next book!
