I read The Plot Against America by Philip Roth a few years ago and it continues to haunt me. This book demonstrates how powerful a government can be and how it can isolate groups of individuals and basically eliminate them from society.
It is a very clever book. Briefly,Mr. Roth "rewrites" history and has Charles Lindberg, a Nazi-leaning Republican running for President (instead of Wendell Wilkie - the real life candidate) and beating FDR in the 1940 elections. From there, we witness the gradual strangulation of the Jewish communities across America as well as America lining up support for Nazi Germany in World War II.
Reading this book reminded me of the Nixon and Bush (#43) administrations and how the public and media "buy into" unjust rules and laws. The ending is amazing and extremely clever.
This is a great read - I envy anyone reading it for the first time. You don't have to be Jewish to understand the evils in this book - what happens here could happen to any group of people.
I hope Powell Book readers enjoy it as much as I did.
