The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
The One and Only Ivan

The Family that Reads, January 27, 2014

The name of this book is "The one and only Ivan". This story is about a Silverback gorilla. This gorilla is not any ordinary gorilla. This gorilla is being held captive for 25 years in a cage. Ivan has been held at Big Top 8 Mall and Video Arcade. I would recommend this book. I think this book should be read out loud. It is the most beautiful and simple book I think I have ever read.
Written by Fanciful Fashion Kid, age 8.

The Boy on the Wooden Box: How the Impossible Became Possible . . . on Schindler's List by Leon Leyson
The Boy on the Wooden Box: How the Impossible Became Possible . . . on Schindler's List

The Family that Reads, December 5, 2013

Painting Pixie, age 8, says: The Boy on the Wooden Box is about a 10 year old Jewish boy who lives in Krakow, Poland at the beginning of WWII. The Nazis start to take over Poland. Leon Leyson and his family survive the Holocaust with the help of Oskar Schindler. This story is from a kid's perspective. It is a great story of survival and a boy's love for his family. If you have a kid interested in WWII - this would be a great gift.

Bigger Than a Bread Box by Laurel Snyder
Bigger Than a Bread Box

The Family that Reads, November 28, 2013

Painting Pixie, age 8 writes: I liked this book because there is a magical bread box that gives Rebecca any wish as big as the bread box. This book is good for a kid who wants to dream. It would also be good for a kid whose parents are going through a divorce.

The Call of the Wild and White Fang (Bantam Classics) by Jack London
The Call of the Wild and White Fang (Bantam Classics)

The Family that Reads, November 28, 2013

Painting Pixie, age 8 and Avid Angler, age 10, write: This is an adventure told from a dog's perspective. The dog's name is Buck and he is a husky. Buck is kidnapped from his home and taken on a ship to Alaska. Buck is forced to be a sled dog as his master searches for gold during the gold rush. We recommend this book to a kid who likes adventure. You can snuggle in your bed reading this and feel like you're in the Alaskan wilderness.

Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai
Inside Out & Back Again

The Family that Reads, November 26, 2013

Painting Pixie, age 8, writes: This beautifully told story about a Vietnamese girl gives you the heartbreak of leaving your beloved country. She survives the beginning of the Vietnam war. She escapes on a boat and later settles in the countryside of Alabama. You read this story and you believe that you're the luckiest person alive to escape a war. The author tells her story in poems. Each poem is like a picture.
