To Bless the Space Between Us: A Collection of Invocations and Blessings by John O'donohue
To Bless the Space Between Us: A Collection of Invocations and Blessings

ThereseC, January 31, 2013

This book was a pleasant surprise. Directed towards times of transition and change in our lives, I found it useful and heartwarming at all times. A page opened at random always took me out of the harried chaos of the outer world, and offered a moment of reflection about nature, self, and the present moment. Highly recommended as a gift - to yourself, as well as others!

Storming Las Vegas: How a Cuban-Born, Soviet-Trained Commando Took Down the Strip to the Tune of Five World-Class Hotels, Three Armored Ca by John Huddy
Storming Las Vegas: How a Cuban-Born, Soviet-Trained Commando Took Down the Strip to the Tune of Five World-Class Hotels, Three Armored Ca

I was delightfully surprised by the breadth of this seeming local Las Vegas crime story. It is primarily the life story of the product of a particular time and place in history: What was life like for the people of Cuba under the US supported Bautista regime - and was the Soviet Union any better or worse for them? What were the effects of the Cold War on individual soldiers; what are the effects of military training and war on any of our soldiers; where do old soldiers go and what do they do after they fight our wars for us and we have no more use for them? Ethical issues - could you, would you cut the lifeline to a small number of people in order to save a much larger number of people; or should all drown trying to do the impossible? Life and challenges in Las Vegas/US for legal immigrants trying to establish a life, believing in the "American Dream." The frustrations of a trained professional working with ordinary criminals. In the end, robberies went bad - can we expect anything else from soldiers trained from childhood to be soldiers? It's a good "true crime" story as well. A very thoughtful and enlightening read.

The Last Wild Witch: An Eco-Fable for Kids and Other Free Spirits

This is a delightful book, with joyful lessons of responsibility for self and nature, for both child and adult readers. I bought it for all grandchildren, nieces and nephews, friends kids, and the local elementary school library, and of course myself! Make a gift of it to yourself and those you love.
