The Moon Before Morning by W. S. Merwin
The Moon Before Morning

Thomas H. Pruiksma, May 28, 2014

I have read Merwin's poems closely for many years and have long marveled at how he makes even the most ordinary seeming of words sing, but in this new book, I am newly amazed. It is harrowingly good. Merwin has achieved an even greater simplicity and authority, speaking directly of his life and his place and the love he has come to and the marvels always waiting to astonish us. It is the best book of poems I have read in years. I am astounded to live in the same time as he does.

Here are just three of many favorite lines:

In my youth I believed in somewhere else
I put faith in travel
now I am becoming my own tree

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
The Song of Achilles

Thomas H. Pruiksma, January 2, 2013

It's been a long time since I've fallen in love with a novel, but I've fallen hard for this one. Not only does it tell an extraordinary love story, it does so in luminous, radiant prose. You can hear how deeply Miller's study of Homer has imbued her language with elegance and power. Not a single word is out of place. I'm going to be reading and rereading this book for many years to come.
