Shantaram is a well written, lush story that takes place primarily in Bombay and in some ways is a love poem to a very complex city. Supposedly based on Robert's actual life, whether or not the protagonist had these experiences or not, Shantaram is a rich, violent and passionate tale of one man trying to figure the balance between "doing the right thing" and "the ends justifying the means". Full of well developed characters who have found themselves in vibrant Bombay before it changed it's name to Mumbai, the story follows the protagonist on his journey towards self realization and insightful thinking on what it means to be a man. Over 900 pages long, I could not put this book down. Simply stunning. I have recommended it to everyone I know. Now I recommend it to you.
