I love reading a confident writer -- a writer that you just know early on is in complete control of their story. With this book, I was completely hooked in by page 9 and the words, "it's between us." From there, the book weaves you backward and forward in time, traveling to different locations with a variety of characters taking the stage. It's a great read - poignant, funny and always entertaining.

As he did with Cloud Atlas, David Mitchell takes us to places we've never been before, but gives us such detail and rich characters that that sense of place stays with us for months afterward. With The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet we take a journey into the workings of the Dutch East Indies Company in 18th century Dejima, a trading island with closed access off the coast of Nagasaki. His imagining of this world is meticulous, from daily life to the hopes and dreams of the Dutch, Japanese, and even the captain and crew of an English frigate that dramatically threatens the uneasy symbosis of East and West in Dejima.
