Very cute companion piece (of my own random determination) to "The Sherlockian"; Not incredibly deep but rather fun and nostalgic, I enjoy the homage and not much gets more true than the reminder that it really is all in the details.
I am not a fan of the horror genre, so I have veered away from Straub, aligning him with King, Koontz, et al. But I sure am a sucker for a mystery, so I had to check it out. Admittedly, you kinda want to strangle someone to get through the slow-as-molasses beginning but if you can conjure the patience, you will be rewarded with a great old-fashioned yarn. The picturesque false paradise hiding the seamy world of corruption, prejudice, abuse is secondary to the charismatic characters of the junior & senior detective as they meet and meld a cold case from the past with the current conspiracy afoot. There is a slight supernatural tinge, but what you take away from the telling is a fondness for a story of the kind of intelligent, forthright and persistent people that you wish weren't just fiction.

I haven't read this book since I was a child but it was a true original. I'm not sure how much I cared about that, I just thought it awesome. Classic best friends (portrayed by animals) replete with colorful personalities: sarcasm, nobility, curiosity & always up for adventure - The pets are the only ones who may know the truth about the innocent little bunny and the drained-of-all-color carrots..... cue eerie music. I want to get it for my nephew and can't wait to read it again!

Unlike his films, which never have hit a home run with me, this is a pretty interesting read. An oddly charismatic man - or perhaps just odd - I couldn't help thinking this book was far more "freakishly mainstream" than how the passage of time has endeared his old movies to new critics.
I loved Primeval, and not all books based on tv series quite cut it but I really liked how the author captured the characters and their world - The plot of this one being especially cool and a nice twist concerning the modern day "big animals" of Africa going Darwin with the anomaly's dinos;-)
