This Dame for Hire

Faye Quick in 1940's New York is one of thousands of women who stepped into men's shoes during WWII, in this case as a private detective. Formerly the secretary, now Faye is handling the agency until her boss Woody returns from the war. Then she tripped over a body, and fell into her first murder case. With wits, determination, some outright fakery, and a little help from her psychic friend, Anne, Faye pursues leads and suspects from NYU to Greenwich Village to uncover the college girl's murderer, and finds a different facet to the victim with every interview she conducts. Along the way, we see, hear, and live wartime New York and '40's slang, entertainment and social class attitudes. I loved Faye's sassy attitude and Sandra Scoppettone's grasp of details. When Faye empties her purse, I can almost see the same contents in my mother's "handbag". A good mystery with engaging characters, especially for WWII buffs or female detective fans.
