Appetite for Profit: How the Food Industry Undermines Our Health and How to Fight Back by Michele Simon
Appetite for Profit: How the Food Industry Undermines Our Health and How to Fight Back

VeganSyd, February 26, 2008

The author Michele Simon rightly urges us citizens to become involved in community education wherever possible. Now that people really understand that the earth cannot support a meat-based diet, it's important to let low- and middle-income folks realize that a plant based diet is just as affordable as cheap fast food. Ms. Simon is spreading the word rightly: A plant-based diet that relies on whole fruits, veggies, grains, and beans can actually be more affordable than one heavy with meat and dairy products. The key is relying on unprocessed foods. Ms. Simon: "The science says that we should be eating mostly plant-based food, but the government recommendations reflect the desire of Big Food." In Portland, we're spreading the word too: Since meat is the no. 1 cause of global warming, our public outreaches find people agreeing to "Go Vegan On Mondays" since 20% more heart attacks occur on Mondays. And Portland is the most vegan-friendly large city in the United States. We need more books like Michele Simon's, showing us what we can do now to save the world.

Earth Under Fire: How Global Warming Is Changing the World by Gary Braasch
Earth Under Fire: How Global Warming Is Changing the World

VeganSyd, November 19, 2007

I appreciate reading what I could about the book, Earth Under Fire.... I respect the author's many credentials and first-hand experience in exploring the causes of global warming. I feel that the subject of global warming is the No. 1 concern for all of us on the earth. I pledge to buy Gary Braasch's book if he will pledge to "Go Vegan On Mondays" -- at least; (that's the day when there are 20% more heart attacks.) We can not only improve human health but make a tremendous impact on global warming simply by reducing our consumption of animal products, along with investing in alternative energy resources. The World Health Organization, United Nations and University of Chicago reports underscore the necessity of seriously reducing factory farming of domestic animals. Animal factory-farming uses 1/3 of the earth's viable land, over 1/2 of the earth's water, and over 1/3 of the petroleum consumed in the U.S.

Is going vegan too radical? By doing so, we will actually free up the land, water and air, so as to feed the half of the world whose people are starving.
