Tonight is the first event for the new book, and I've spent most of the afternoon at home with curlers in my hair and cucumber circles on the eyes...

Don't let the characters' names trip you up, this is a good book. It tells of how a young woman prepares for an arranged marriage and prepares to become one of the greatest female military leaders in English history. I really appreciated the author's historical notes, explaining where she got the ideas for her story, and letting the reader know what is fact and what is fiction.

As a series opener this book is the tops! We learn all about the secret lives of goblins, and who knew they would be so fascinating! But be warned: when you go with Kate through the front door of the Goblin kingdom you may not escape... at least until you finish the book. Worth reading, impossilbe not to enjoy.
I love, love, love this book. I'm so happy that I bought it so that I can read and re-read it. Go with Mel through the hard days of war, of poverty, of ignorance, and then with her into the whirlwind of political intrigue and elegant flirtation. She is a wonderful role-model for young women: strong, brave, willing to learn, a true friend and sister. Also enjoy the added short story at the end of this edition, so that you can see just how she spends her "happily ever after." You can't help but fall in love with this novel!

This was a bitter-sweet way to end the triology. The story is full of excitement and adventure, but also real issues that we all have to be deal with: family relationships, the desire to escape, etc. Not an ideal ending, but possibly the only one that makes sense.

When I finished the first book I just couldn't wait to read the next one. Westerfeld does an amazing job of picking up this book where the first one leaves off. I was quite impressed at the fast-paced action and the quick thinking by the characters. Not an hour is wasted as the events unfold, and I don't regret a moment of reading it, even if it had to happen during the regular 24 hours.
