A Walk Among the Tombstones: A Matthew Scudder Crime Novel
A Walk Among the Tombstones: A Matthew Scudder Crime Novel

William Hardcastle, March 28, 2014

Classic Matt Scudder " one of the toughest and best in this Edgar Award-winning series, Ruthless, ingenious murderers are preying on the loved ones of those who live outside the law. Ex-cop-turned-p.i. Matthew Scudder has no love for the drug dealers and criminals who now need his help, since they cannot turn to the police. The movie of this great book will be released this September!

A Walk Among the Tombstones by Lawrence Block
A Walk Among the Tombstones

William Hardcastle, February 9, 2014

Like most novels in the Scudder series, this one is dark and obssessed with death. It seems that even as the alcoholic Scudder gets more of a firm handle on his sobriety and his life, his cases get uglier. I believe this novel is being released in theaters this September and will star Liam Neeson. A great choice to play Matt Scudder.

The Last Good Kiss (Vintage) by James Crumley
The Last Good Kiss (Vintage)

William Hardcastle, February 8, 2014

"The Last Good Kiss" is as good as any hardboiled detective fiction ever written. Crumley's vivid detail, down-and-out characters and brief bursts of violence make his story as vivid as a Hank Williams tune. His hero, C.W. Sughrue ("Sugh" as in "sugar" and rue as in "rue the goddamned day") is everything a hardboiled detective ought to be; alcoholic, rebellious, cynical and beholden to no code of honor but his own. The mystery itself unfolds in a bizarre and complex manner, leading to a payoff that you know won't be pretty. It may take Crumley a bit too long to get there, but its a fun trip while it lasts.

When the Sacred Ginmill Closes (Matthew Scudder Mysteries) by Lawrence Block
When the Sacred Ginmill Closes (Matthew Scudder Mysteries)

William Hardcastle, January 12, 2014

One of the most significant books in the Matt Scudder series. Masterfully, with a raw edge, Lawrence Block gives his insightful revelations about surviving and getting and staying sober. All surrounded by a compelling mystery with beloved consistently surprising characters. This book introduced me to the music of Dave Van Ronk as well!!

Kindness Goes Unpunished (Walt Longmire Mysteries) by Craig Johnson
Kindness Goes Unpunished (Walt Longmire Mysteries)

William Hardcastle, December 14, 2013

No wonder these books have been adopted to the hit summer series LONGMIRE (on A&E). Rich characters and unique juxtaposition of suspense and humor. Each of the series stands on its own s well.
