Song of the Crow by Layne Maheu
Song of the Crow

Yanula, August 9, 2006

Oh, my, what a beautifully-written book! And what a great premise: Song of the Crow is the story of Noah's ark, told from the point of view of one of the birds onboard. When I first learned of this book, I had expected the ark's journey to be the focus of the novel, but it is much, much broader: this is, believe it or not, a book about the emotional and intellectual development of a very smart creature set against the backdrop of the ire of an angry god and a resentful and not very competent human's response to it. The results are both funny and disastrous -- and the crow's perspective feels bone-level accurate. (Although not being a crow myself, naturally I cannot be 100% certain of that.) I'm quite certain, in fact, that I will never look at crows the same way again, and that this feathery protagonist will be flying through my dreams for years to come.
