Petropolis by Anya Ulinich
Petropolis

Yolande, September 9, 2007

Very compelling coming of age narrative of Sasha Goldberg, a teenage biracial Jewish girl from Siberia. An artist, child of the exiled intelligentsia, growing up in Asbestos 2, she embarks on her journey into the world, and coming to America. The descriptions of Russian bleakness and American alienation alike are captivating, tug at the heart, and open our minds. This is a unique book and writer.

For anyone interested in the remarkable Chilean people and the unique culture of this country, Allende's book is a delicious read! For those interested in South American societies and peoples, this book shouldn't be passed up. As always, Allende's writing is poignant, witty and insightful.

Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed by Jared Diamond
Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed

Yolande, June 6, 2007

A very gratifying read. Collapse allows us to understand the needs and structures necessary for society to flourish and, using multiple examples around the globe and throughout history, illustrates how societies, even complex civilizations, may collapse. This is a book rich in ecological understanding and imparts to the reader a wealth of knowledge regarding the environment and the choices humans make (for good or ill) in impacting the ecological foundation of social stability.

Examples of Printed Folk-Lore Concerning the Orkney & Shetland Islands, Issue 49
Examples of Printed Folk-Lore Concerning the Orkney & Shetland Islands, Issue 49

Yolande, September 7, 2006

To really appreciate the state of today's political environment one must review how we got here. Truth in power has eroded and this book describes how. Are we fully aware of JFK's deception during the Cuban Missile Crisis and how he secretly negotiated with the Russians? By taking a different public position he allowed the Cold War to unfold based on a lie. Likewise, the deception of LBJ in the Gulf of Tonkin began the debacle of the Viet Nam War. These former presidents are not blameless but having presided over more innocent times, they were not challenged by the majority. Over time, less and less honesty is expected. This book is a significant addition to the historical record and a very interesting read!
