The Riots (Association of Writers and Writing Programs Award for Creative Nonfiction) by Danielle Cadena Deulen
The Riots (Association of Writers and Writing Programs Award for Creative Nonfiction)

akira, March 7, 2013

I wasn't surprised to read that she's also a published poet. She shifts her style around from piece to piece, but much of it is rhythmic and calls out to be performed. I particularly appreciated the earlier pieces and the one about the 1992 LA Riots and her experiences during the aftermath. She's had a tough time growing up and this is a powerful way to repurpose that negative energy. Highly recommended

Vampires in the Lemon Grove: Stories by Karen Russell
Vampires in the Lemon Grove: Stories

akira, March 7, 2013

I've been insanely excited for this book since I found out about it last year and it lived up to all my expectations. I am completely smitten with Karen Russell. She was adorable & incredibly sweet when I met her at the Boston Book Festival 2 summers ago and you combine that with her writing and I'm bluebirds circling my heads smitten. I'd actually already read the first 4 stories in this book and they held up fantastic rereading them in this collection. The collection is everything I've come to expect from her stories, imaginative, innovative, beautifully written, honest & sometimes terrifying. The suspense in this collection feels like a natural development in her writing.

The Beginner's Goodbye by Anne Tyler
The Beginner's Goodbye

akira, March 7, 2013

The Beginner's Goodbye is a real return to form for Anne Tyler. Fans of her writing will be delighted to see so many of her signature tropes dusted off and given a new lease of life. There's the socially inept protagonist, his domineering sister who secretly begins dating one of his acquaintances, the flight to the parental home in the face of trauma, the regression to childhood and the coming to terms with mistakes that cannot be undone.
