Lark and Termite by Jayne Anne Phillips
Lark and Termite

alsek, February 7, 2009

A wonderful novel by an accomplished writer. Set in West Virginia and Korea during the 1950's. Do yourself a favor and buy a first printing of this book which certainly is going to become a collectible. If you don't believe me simply read the blurbs on the back from a trio of heavyweights - Alice Munro, Junot Diaz and Tim O'Brien.

Outstanding first work of fiction set in northern Wisconsin. The main protagoninst is a mute boy who makes for the wilds with a group of canine companions. One of the most moving works of fiction I've read this year. Do yourself a favor and escape into this wonderful book.

All the Sad Young Literary Men by Keith Gessen
All the Sad Young Literary Men

alsek, June 3, 2008

Erudite first novel, both funny and sad. Gessen writes about Sam, Mark, and Keith as they struggle to find meaning and purpose in their post-undergraduate lives.
Highly recommended.

Outstanding first work by an author who is definitely one to watch. This book of short stories will grab you and won't let go. One of the best publications I've read this year. I am very anxious to see what Nam Le writes next and how many awards he will win. Sensational.
