Lincoln remarkably chose all his strongest rivals as his cabinet, and Goodwin gives us each rival's story. A good idea well executed; the rivals are interesting in themselves, and they add to your understanding of Lincoln's accomplishments. Goodwin's pat analyses and chapter closing deep thoughts are often useless, but they take up few lines out of a 700-page book that I read in a weekend.
