Great Expectations by Kathy Acker
Great Expectations

amir_tamal, November 13, 2008

Parodying Dickens' novel of the same name, Acker's first chapter assumes a narrative voice that shifts without prior hints in the later two chapters. if you have read "The Waste Land", or come across the poetry of Baudelaire, or seen "Mulholland Drive", you have seen the beginning of the postmodern discontent that teems in this novel.

The novel packs the experimental art of bringing voices together under a connector: pain, in the form of denial, reproach, sex without commitments etc. I found hints of bondage and fetishism here and there. The Empire that is said to have decentralized itself can also be traced if you are perky about the post-colonial.

I have read it. I know I will read it again. Wish I had access to all her books!
